Francis John Floyd

Sapper; 88th Field Company, Royal Engineers

Died of illness: 18th February 1917, Mesopotamia (Iraq)

Francis John Floyd was born in Cardiff in July 1896 to parents Frederick and Ada. His mother was from Llanishen, though the family lived in Coedcae Street in Grangetown and then in Treharris Street in Roath.

It is not known when Francis enlisted in the Army nor do we know much about his service. By 1917 he was a Sapper in the 88th Field Company, Royal Engineers. The company was supporting the British advance through Mesopotamia in fairly arduous desert conditions. It was during this advance, in February 1917, that Francis fell ill and died a few days later. The exact cause of his death is unknown, though disease and heat-related illnesses were rife. He is buried in Amara Cemetery in Iraq along with fellow Llanishen man Charles McEachran.
